Peoria County Meeting

August 12, 2013 – 6:00 p.m.

In Attendance: Carol Trumpe, Brian Elsasser, Andy Keyt, Nigel Austin and Margaret Cover

Nigel Austin, Interim County Director- Unit #11, called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. and welcomed everyone. Updates include the addition of two new educators, Jason Haupt in Fulton County (Lewistown) as Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator and Ginger Schnecker in Tazewell (Pekin) as 4-H Youth Development Educator. The Peoria office currently has an opening for a secretary and testing for that position will be held on Friday, August 16th.

Unit 11 has added the Master Naturalist program which complements the Master Gardener program. Master Naturalist focuses on natural plants and flora, natural resources and environmental impact. This program involves training which starts in a few weeks and is being led by Rhonda Ferree, Horticulture Educator. Jason Haupt, Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, will also be involved in teaching some of the classes.

Extension has received all of its money from the State of Illinois for Fiscal Year 2013. The first payment was received earlier in the year and the second payment a few weeks ago. Money for Fiscal Year2014 has not yet been received.

In 2013 Extension requested 12.8 million and received 10 million which was 78%, Cook County Initiative requested 3.5 million and received 2.5 million which was 70%, and Youth Development requested 1.2 million and received 1 million which was 83%.

Nigel asked Margaret Cover to give a brief report on summer programming completed at the Peoria County Office. Peoria County served a total of 1,143 youth at approximately 50 different sites and also conducted a one-week cooking school in Peoria Heights.

4-H also presented Camp Clover in Kickapoo, Bartonville, Elmwood, and Peoria Heights for two weeks at each site.

Nigel presented the draft 2015 budget and explained each line item as it relates to Peoria County. The request this year is for $110,000 which is the same amount as requested last year from the County Board.

A motion to accept the proposed budget for 2014-2015 for $110,000 was made by Brian Elsasser and seconded by Andy Keyt. Motion carried.

Discussion followed on how the budget progresses through the County Government. It will be voted on by the Board the third Thursday in November.

Motion to adjourn was made by Carol Trumpe and seconded by Andy Keyt. Meeting adjourned at 6:40pm.

Respectfully submitted

Margaret Cover
