This meeting has passed.

University of Illinois Extension- Clark, Crawford and Edgar Counties

Unit Council minutes

November 30, 2017

Members present: Bev Goeckler, Laura Collier, Vicky Bonelli, Barret Von Behren, BJ Titus, Stacy Woodyard, Jessie Crews, and Mary Liz Wright.

The meeting was called to order at 6:03 p.m.

Bev Goeckler made a motion to approve the minutes of the September 26, 2017 meeting. Vicky Bonelli seconded the motion. Motion carried by unanimous vote.

Stacy provided an update on the unit, sharing that the fiscal situation has no improved. No state funds have been received, or released to the University, for almost three years. She also shared that the Edgar SNAP- Ed position will be filled in the very near future and the Publicity and Promotions Specialist started in October. The Commercial Ag position is posted and interviews are scheduled for yet this year so hopefully an offer will be extended before the holiday break. The County Director position in Unit 25 has been hired and started November 2, 2017. Stacy has been relieved of interim duties but serves as a mentor for the new hire so some time will still be dedicated to supporting that new staff member. The Crawford office is continuing to explore relocation options and believes there may be a viable solution near the existing office.

Program Updates:

Mary Liz Wright reported that she is currently scheduling Lincoln Trail College programs for the spring, Meals for a Healthy Heart, and Diabetes education programs.

Jessie Crews reported that Program Coordinators have been busy with Achievement Nights, recognizing 4-H members and volunteers for their efforts. She shared that all 3 counties have made a commitment to focus on Belonging- part of the BIG-M effort and also a "4 or More" campaign effort to increase project enrollment for each member to at least 4 project areas. The recent officer training had 37 youth and 7 leaders attend from the unit. Upcoming youth development programs include I-Govern with Marshall High School Juniors and Real Colors at Paris Cooperative High School.

Stacy reported that the university closes offices for the holiday break. The offices will be closed Monday, December 25th through Monday, January 1st- reopening on Tuesday, January 2, 2018. The unit annual staff retreat is scheduled for Monday, December 18th. Staff will participate in a staff meeting, lunch, and personal development activity for the day.

Stacy shared that some of the staff have been asked to develop "who we are and why it matters" statements and those that have not will be asked to do so at the staff retreat. She then asked members present to discuss, from their perspective, "Who" Extension is and "Why" Extension matters in their lives or in the communities in which we work. Some of the items shared are:

provide free educational outreach opportunities to all our citizens; reliable/valid information; teach, train and encourage the youth of the future; resources for adults and beyond; networking/connections/ life-long friends; kids are exposed to projects/opportunities that can provide life-long careers; partnerships with like mission organizations; the youth in Extension programs are so much more advanced than their peers; information and staff are easily accessible; if the staff doesn't know the answer, they will get it for you; There is something for everyone- all ages and family experiences.

Members shared some personal and professional items happening in their families, work, or Extension volunteer roles.

No public comments.

Future meeting dates: January 30, 2018; March 27, 2018; May 31, 2018.

Laura Collier made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Bev Goeckler seconded the motion. Motion carried.
