MAPLE LEAF SPOTS/TEARS

We have two maple trees in our front yard that were planted 3 yrs ago. They are one the larger size balled/burlaped and planted by a nursery. The larger one doesn't appear to have much new growth this year and some branches have no leaves at or near the ends. Some of the leaves appear chewed or torn but we see no insects on them. The other tree on the lower third the leaves have scattered black specks to some leaves loosing their green color and getting a copper tinge to them. Does anyone have any suggestions - is it a pest or a disease? I read about a problem with oak leaves - does it also affect maples?

Marcia, These are young trees that sound as though they have never gotten established. Be sure to water regularly and mulch with wood chips. You may want to send a sample with pix to the plant clinic. Here is their website. http://plantclinic.cropsci.uiuc.edu/ good luck, Sandy
