bare root tree planting

[Post a Follow Up] [Post to this category]

We just received 10 "baby" trees, bare root, (all flowering) and need to plant them. What is the safest way to help them survive the winter? In Pesotum the earth is frozen and wet. Can we plant them in containers and transplant in the spring? If so, where do we keep them and what size containers do we need? If not, is it safe to "heel" them when the earth is so wet?

Hi Sharon, sorry for the delay in sending a message. you may have already done something with them. Potting is fine as well as heeling into mulch pile or soil mound. if in pots I would recommend putting them into an unheated garage or porch until it gets a bit warmer in March. be sure to protect from rabbits with wire covers or such. rabbits love new trees. good luck, sandy
