What are these things?

After a recent rain we noticed several orange jelly like tentacles protruding from small balls in our evergreen tree. Is this an early form of bag worms or is it a beneficial aspect of the tree itself. If you would like I can e-mail you a photo. Several of the balls are the size of golf balls while others are as large as baseballs. They are absolutely disgusting in appearance.

HI Jenica, sounds like one of the cedar rust diseases. It is a fungus. it is disgusting looking but they will soon dry up. usually we tell people not to worry about it. Check out this website for more info and pictures. http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/focus/cedarrustdiseases.html Sandy
