Ants in the vegetable patch

There are ant colonies in my vegetable patch and the ants are eating the leaves off the plants. how cqan i get rid of them in a nontoxic way?

HI Wendy, although it may appear that the ants are eating the leaves it is more than likely some other critter, ie rabbits, caterpillars or beetles. We do not have leaf cutter ants here. Ants will hang out on plants if there are aphids. The ants eat the honeydew left from the aphids. you may want to put a wire cover or row cover over the plants to see if the damage stops. good luck,
