hanging tomato plant injury

I have one of those topsy-turvy tomato growers. It's working great but the plant I have in it is a little defiant on the whole growing towards the ground thing. It curved around to grow towards the sky but eventually it got big enough that it couldn't support it's weight any more. One day the stem split and the plant now points to the ground. The split in the stem is with the grain of the stem so it's not cutting off the flow of nutrients and for now everything is ok--except the 1 millimeter wide 3 inch long crack. I have it supported a little bit with a bungee cord to take some of the extra weight off of it but I would like to know if there is anything else I can do to keep it alive. I'm afraid that eventually the crack will kill it before it has time to heal over the wound. Is there anything I can or should do to protect my tomato plant? Thanks!

HI Jennifer, I know these systems might seem like a good idea but I will confess I am not a big proponent just for the reasons you have mentioned. plants want to grow toward the sky. that said. I will also confess I have used duct tape around cracked stems. I would never do this for a perennial but at this point it may be about the best option. good luck. sandy
