lightning bugs and gingko

Our large male gingko tree has many lightning bugs crawling from the base of the tree up (even during the daylight hours) There are also many small holes further up that look like woodpecker drillings that haven't been there in the past. What could be the problem and what should we do?

Hi Sandy, If the tree looks healthy then I don't believe there is a problem. Fireflies are mating and lay eggs in soil so wouldnt be surprising to see them in clusters right now. they are beneficial and dont cause problems for trees. sapsucker woodpeckers can cause vertical or horizontal holes but typically dont do enough damage to cause serious injury. hope this helps.
