hard maple feeding too heavily?

Our westward-facing yard has been home to a large, hard maple tree for at least 5 decades. About 5 years ago, we planted forsythia, azaleas, rhododendrons, and a columnar buckthorn hedge all within 15 - 30 feet of it. None of the flowers have done well, even though we have grown them very successfully elsewhere. The forsythia in particular have been carefully fertilized and were expected to thrive in our southwest corner, but they've barely grown at all. The portion of the hedge furthest away from the maple tree is quite healthy but as it approaches the tree, becomes increasingly sparse. What is the likelihood the maple tree is sucking more than its share of nutrients away from these younger plants? If it might be, what are our options?

Hi Joy, under maple trees is a tough place to get established. it is not only deep shade but also a very dry shade. You didnt mention if you were watering these young plants. they will need extra watering since they are not yet established and are in competition with the tree. I imagine it is more a lack of light and water in these not established plants. forsythia are full sun and the others need at least half day sun. may need to consider more sun loving plants. Sandy
