Straw grass? or Crabgrass?

Both my neighbor & I had new grass planting last fall. There is a taller, light green, weed or grass growing along with the lawn. The nearby nursery said this was crabgrasss. The landscapers said it was straw grass & will die off with stress from the lawnmower. I have never heard of straw grass & the root looks quite invasive. Who should I believe?

Hi Beth, strawgrass is just the seeds from the wheat straw used over new grass plantings. it does not tolerate mowing and quickly dies. tends to be very upright growing. even though it has been warm it is early to see much in the way of large crabgrass plants. they would look smaller with flatter looking growth. I imagine it is strawgrass but you may want to take a sample or send a pix to your local extension office. please use this website to find the one nearest you. http://extension.osu.edu/topics/garden hope this helps. sandy
