We discovered insect holes in young (and not so young) leaves of our treasured Fagus sylvatica "Torulosa" this morning (5/18/12). Insect is primarily targeting youngest expanding leaves. Holes are large, probably 1/8" diameter. What insect is this and how can we control it? We generally avoid any chemicals at all, even on non-edibles, but this tree is *special*, so we'll compromise. Tom, Are you actually seeing any insects? I would look at the undersides of the leaves and throughout the tree. if you are not seeing any insects it could have been damaged from something else or the insects are gone. you are welcome to send me up close pictures slmason@illinois.edu Keep in mind trees even beloved trees can survive well with some leaf damage.
