I have heard that you can sprinkle salt around an asparagus bed and it does not bother the asparagus but it keeps the weeds down. Is this true and if so, how much should be used?

Thanks

Lois, We hear that recommendtion a lot. However, it is not something we recommend. By the time you get enough salt on the bed to keep down weeds (weeds are pretty tough) you can affect the growth of the asparagus. Your best bet in weed control is hand digging or shallow hoeing very early in the season. Also if you use straw for mulch be sure to shake the straw out first to try to get any seeds dislodged before application.
