rhubarb

I moved into a house during the winter and have discovered rhubarb growing all around the building. It's out of control! There are so many plants that they have started popping up in the lawn! In early spring, a friend came over to gather some and used it for baking and said it wasn't very good. We assume the plants must be old. Yet they continue to grow, grow, grow! I've tried to dig them up but they are huge and obviously the roots go very deep. Sandy, is there anything I can sprinkle on the root to kill the plants?

Pamela, Are you sure its rhubarb? Burdock looks very similar to rhubarb but it tends to be more of a weed. It also has fuzzy leaves and petioles. I have never heard of rhubarb reseeding into lawns. Check out this website. http://www.ppws.vt.edu/scott/weed_id/arfmi.htm At any rate with either you can keep digging and eventually exhaust the root (and yourself) or you could use a broadleaf herbicide such as that used to kill dandelions. You would not have to spray the whole lawn just spot spray the weeds. I would suggest not eating it till you confirm the id. good luck, Sandy
