Storing Mulch

I have several bags of wood chip mulch purchased last fall that I never got around to using. Some were stored in the garage, some outside unprotected. I've read that mulch can "go bad" if left in bags Is it still safe to use this year? If not, can I add it to my compost pile? Thanks!

Wendy, I have never heard of mulch going bad. It would simply decompose. It may stink a bit due to decomposition with little air available. Either way - mulch or compost pile. Shouldnt have a problem with either. Happy Gardening,
