Parasites in Soil?

Recently I was told by my neighbor that 2 owners ago (5+ years) dogs were "housed" in our very small backyard. She indicated that the dogs had been ill with various parasites, so the soil might be contaminated. How do I find out if the soil has parasites? How can I make it safe to use? I would like to do something in my yard NOW, and not have to wait. Right now the yard is just dirt and has been for several years as far as I know. We have several indoor only pets and would not want to infect them from anything that might live in the soil.

Jen, I really think this is a question for your veterinarian concerning parasites. It may be more a matter of protecting your pets with recommended preventattives. This is a good time to mulch, plant groundcovers or get a lawn established.
