bark on tree

I recently lost a tulip tree, because insects got under the bark on one side, near the base of the trunk. Despite spraying, the area spread and the tree was destroyed.

Now, I have the same problem developing with an apple tree. One one side of the wound, the tree has sealed, but on the other, bark continues to recede.

When I peek under the bark, I often find earwigs.

My questions are: * Are the earwigs eating the tree, or are they just seeking shelter during the day? * What common bugs might cause this problem and how can I control them?

Thanks!

Earwigs are considered nuisance temporary pests. During dry hot weather, earwigs seek moisture and cool places. If you'd like to email me a picture of the damage we can help identify the problem for you.
