christmas cactus

I just bought a Christmas cactus. What do I do with it? My mother-in-law has a 25 year old one that is in a barely heated, barely cooled bedroom, in front of a window with a blind on it, and waters it very rarely. It is gorgeous in Dec. But that method scares me.
