tree watering

Hello, we have an older plum tree and an older maple in our front yard (both at least 17 years). We were thinking about getting tree gators for them, but when I looked them up online I only saw them used with new or small trees. Do they make these gators for larger trees?

Thanks

Hi Marya, Gators are useful for young trees because the roots are close to the trunk. As a tree ages the feeder roots which do the work of taking up nutrients and water are more toward the dripline (where outside limbs end) so gators are not useful for older trees. For the older guys any watering should be out toward the dripline such as with a sprinkler. hope this helps.
