Hi,

I am a physical education teacher in the huntley district and I was wondering if you had any hands on activities for me to use with my fifth graders. I am looking to get them into nutrition and wellness. I really wanted to show them the difference between fat and muscle and I was wondering if you had a loaner kit that I could use. Before I became a teacher I used the Dupage u of i extension for a daycare and it was wonderful. They had a kit for disabilities that worked wonders on the children. Thanks again and I want to tell you this is a great program!

Hi Lauren, Thank you for contacting U of I Extension McHenry County about lessons for your fifth grade physical education classes. Unfortunately, I do not have a "kit" demonstrating the difference between fat and muscle and the disabilities lesson that you borrowed from DuPage County Extension is not available here. We do however have a "Walk in my Shoes" kit that demonstrates disabilities that aging Senior Citizens deal with that kids might find interesting. I do have a Nutrition Curriculum called "Balancing Act" that deals with nutrition for pre-teen and teens that I am sure you could adapt and I have a new curriculum that was put out by the National Dairy Council that has some wonderful activities for fifth graders. You are welcome to come to our office in Woodstock and check out what I have available. I do lend my materials out. Good luck! Kasey Murphy FNP Coordinator McHenry County Extension
