Burning bushes.

Help please. I too am seeing most of the green leaves falling off my three burning bushes. They are in their 5th year. Planted 4 ft. apart. Approximately 1 meter high. They bushed out nicely this spring and have about 10 to 12 inches of new green stem growth. 12 days ago they were lightly trimmed 4 inches down. 6 days ago I notices some to the leaves dropping. Now they are getting sparse.

The remaining leaves seem dry and dusty. There is evidence of something eating a few of the leaves, putting 1 inch semi circle holes in the leaves. Many of the leaves now have reddish rust on them. Today I notice webbing covering groups of 4 to 8 leaves on about dozen separate branches. There has been no treatments to the grass border two feet in front of them. I did sprinkle ground cayenne pepper behind them because of skunk problems last year.

I've been proud on how well they have been doing these last couple years, and I know it's kind of silly, but I feel kind of sick about them being sick. I hope there is something I can do to save them. Thank you in advance.

Frank - It sounds as if you have an issue with spider mites. Here is a good article from Iowa State University: https://www.extension.iastate.edu/news/2006/jun/070901.htm Good luck!
