Hi, Allison:
First, I live and work up in central Illinois, so I am no expert on this subject. However, an article from the University of Arizona mentions pruning palms and states the following points- 1. If possible only remove the brown or yellowing fronds. 2. If you need to remove green fronds, using a clock face for reference, never remove fronds between 10 and 2 o'clock. source- http://ag.arizona.edu/gardening/news/azdailystar/palm_care.html
Clemson University in South Carolina also talks about pruning sago palms. They caution that if you prune green fronds, never cut into the trunk and never tear off fronds. source- http://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheets/hgic1019.htm
I hope this helps you-
