Are mushrooms in the turf grass area a sign there could be fungus or disease affecting the st. augustine grass.

Mr. Howerton, Mushrooms in turf grass are not necessarily a sign of disease. Often, there is woody debris (like a tree trunk or roots) below the surface of the lawn, and fungi that naturally help to decompose the wood will at some point in their life cycle produce structures above ground that we recognize as mushrooms. If the blades of grass are showing any unusual symptoms, I would suggest you call your local University of Florida Extension office. http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ Thank you for writing! -Jennifer
