Hi, Could you please tell me where I can get worms locally for composting and what kind should I get. Also, how many should I get?

Thanks

Sandra Mason, University of Illinois Extension Horticulture Educator recommends you purchase Red Wiggler composting worms. Where to purchase? Perhaps check with a local bait shop to see if they carry Red Wigglers. Here is a reference site to check out about composting http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycwasteless/html/compost/compostproj.shtml. She also suggests you google: vermi composting for additional information, and to check with your local Extension Office. Best of luck.

Just received this info and wanted to share it with you as another resource. One of the best worms to use is red worms also known as red wigglers. They are the most efficient at vermicomposting. The best source for obtaining these worms is through a mail order company known as Flowerfield Enterprises in Kalamazoo, MI. This is a company operated by Mary Appelhof, a leader in the vermicomposting world. You can contact them at www.wormwoman.com or 269-327-0108. Here you can find out what they offer and also order materials.
