Norway Maple Bark Splitting and Peeling

We have a Norway Maple that we planted a year ago. This Spring we noticed that the bark is splitting and peeling on the South side. I took note of your response to others with this problem. Should we cut the peeling bark off? When we wrap it in the winter, what is the best thing to wrap with?

Thank you! Stephanie

Hi, Stephanie! According to Dave Robson, (http://web.extension.illinois.edu/state/newsdetail.cfm?NewsID=9241 ) you should wait until the crack underneath heals up before you cut away the loose bark, so that nothing takes up residence under it. As for what to wrap it with, late this fall, any of the paper wraps will work just fine. ( http://urbanext.illinois.edu/news/news.cfm?NewsID=28396 ) Good luck!
