Maple tree

Hi, I have several vertical cracks at the bottom of my maple that appear to go deep int the tree. The cracks are about 1-2 feet above the ground. Also the leader at the top appears dead, having no leaves this season. However the rest of the branches have leaves. My river birch at the other end of the yard only has leaves on the west side. Could these be resulting from the same problem? (Insect/fungus). My other trees appear fine. Thanks!

Janet - Maples and Birches are not in the same family, and don't share common diseases and insects for the most part. They can be affected by the same environmental problems, though. I would suggest you take several photos of both trees (close and far, different angles) and bring them into the DuPage office - it's very close to you! 1100 E.
