The leaves on my trees are twisted, dried and mottled and the bark is separating from the trunk exposing the reddish inner bark. The trees are about 40 years old and this has happened over the last two years. The leaves also have cankers on them. Any advice?

Greetings David and thank you for your question. Unfortunately, I won't be of much assistance to you regarding your question.

As I've stated many times throughout this forum, more often than not, only an "on-site" evaluation of the affected tree(s) by a professional tree care specialist (forester, certified arborist, entomologist, pathologist, or horticulturist) can provide you a legitimate diagnosis for tree health concerns. Even after an on-site evaluation is conducted, further plant tissue analysis may be needed. A local university Plant Clinic may prove useful in those cases http://www.labservices.uoguelph.ca/units/pdc/

Best of luck!
