We have a mature black walnut tree in our yard that has a trunk diameter of atleast 30 inches. In the last few months I have noticed the bark turning blackish and falling off in large pieces. It is especially apparent at the base of the tree but seems to be traveling up the trunk. Is this rot? What do I do? The leaves and fruit seem very healthy, but I am very concerned about the tree. thank you

Greetings Cheri and thank you for your question.

Unfortunately, your question requires an on-site visit and evaluation by a tree care specialist (forester, certified arborist, horticulturist, entomologist, or pathologist). Regrettably, I cannot provide an effective answer to your question via the limited information provided above. More often than not, most insect and disease questions require hands-on assessment and evaluation...sorry.
