How about a river birch susceptibility to v. wilt? A tree company said that my red bud and ornamental plum have it. They injected the soil with a treatment. Every year I am losing branches, not leaves wilting. The bark on each tree appears to have a type of greenish white discoloration like algae// I want to cut down and replant-- but not in the same area?? Do you think this is v. wilt?

Greetings Karen,

Is river birch susceptible to Verticillium wilt? The answer is, "no". Is eastern redbud and plum susceptible to Verticillium wilt? The answer is, "yes".

Fungicides to treat Verticillium wilt are not recommended or warranted, nor will they cure the fungal infection!!! In order to correctly verify whether or not your plum and redbud have Verticillium wilt, you should submit several samples to Purdue University plant clinic http://www.ppdl.purdue.edu/PPDL/index.html
