What could cause a mature Maple Tree to turn color and drop leaves in July and August?

Greetings Samuel,

Seeing that a good majority of Illinois has been subject to summer drought, I am going to say your tree's premature leaf drop is induced by inadequate soil moisture further compounded by tough urban growing conditions.

It is important to remember that yard trees, during periods of insufficient rainfall, need to be watered periodically to maintain proper growth and vigor.

Moreover, we are witnessing this phenomenon all across the state.
