When and How to Prune Pin Oaks (IL)

We have a large pin oak tree in our front yard. We've not had it pruned in the 10 years since we've lived here, and we doubt that the tree ever has been pruned, as some of the branches have grown into and over others. The tree will probably need some major pruning. What is the best time to prune a pin oak and how would you recommend choosing a tree pruning company? Periodically the leaves have a bumpy texture.

Greetings Susan,

The best time to prune oak trees is during the dormant season (November through late February / early March in central Illinois). I would choose a tree pruning company that employs "Certified Arborists". A list of certified arborists can be found on the following Web site:

Best of luck!
