Planting Black Walnut in Yard (IA)

i have a med size lawn and would like to plant a black walnut tree. Do I have to have more than one for cross pollination? how many years to produce nuts ? can I plant 2 trees within 20-25' of each other? when is the best time to plant ?

Greetings Robin:

You do not have to have more than two eastern black walnut trees for pollination. Black walnut is monoecious, meaning that male and female flowers are borne on the same tree.

Nut production is often quite variable with some trees producing seed as early as 7-10 years.

Yes, you can plant two trees within 20-25' - that provides plenty of space. I'm a huge advocate of spring planting so that is what I recommend.
