Planting New Tree in Place of Old Tree Stump

I was wondering if I could plant a new tree in the same location as an old tree that was removed 7 years ago? The old tree stump has been removed, however there are old tree roots still. The new tree is a Red Maple. I am not sure what the old tree was.
