Can't Identify our Yard Tree - HELP

We recently bought a house in Pana and in front of it sits a very large tree. We have been told by neighbors that it is one of the last standing in Illinois but no one knows what it is. I have asked for help in identifying it on various sites with no responses...I am including addresses to view photos of it - http://pinktadpoles.com/art/tree%20a.jpg http://pinktadpoles.com/art/tree%20b.jpg http://pinktadpoles.com/art/tree%20c.jpg http://pinktadpoles.com/art/tree%20d.jpg

The trunk measures 11' around (at 4.5'). I haven't yet measured the height or crown width but our house is over 4000 sq ft and you can see in the first photo it is large enough to hide our house. When the leaves first appeared they were all a fiery red/orange as in the third photo. Now, the leaves at the bottom are green (see the second photo) but the leaves up top are red. The fourth photo is a view from below showing the foliage above.

I have hopes to get this tree listed on the Illinois Big Tree Register but need to know what it is first!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Greetings Jennifer:

From the photos, it appears your tree is a "cultivar" of European beech (Fagus sylvatica). There are many different cultivars of Fagus sylvatica: bicolor, tri-color, copper, purple-leaved, weeping, etc.

Unfortunately, non-native species are not eligible for inclusion on the Illinois Big Tree Register.

Best of luck!
