Greetings Robert:

No, you do not need a license or permit to cut and sell your "own" trees in Illinois. However, the person who buys your trees must be a licensed timber buyer:

<http://www.ilga.gov/LEGISLATION/ILCS/ilcs3.asp?ActID=1395&ChapAct=225%26nbsp%3BILCS%26nbsp%3B735%2F&ChapterID=24&ChapterName=PROFESSIONS+AND+OCCUPATIONS&ActName=Timber+Buyers+Licensing+Act.>

The best way to get started as a "tree farmer" is to contact your local DNR district forester or to contact a local professional consulting forester to assist you in developing a forest management plan and timber basis.

Best of luck!
