How & When to Prune Pin Oaks

I have three Pin Oaks in my front yard, about 4 years old. I would like to trim the lower branches in order to get my riding mower under them. What is the best time of year to trim them and is there anything I should be concerned with the trimming.

The best time to prune oak trees is during the dormant season (November through February). Pruning during the “dormant” season avoids potential complications with the fungus oak wilt.

For proper pruning methods, please review the following publications:

http://www.na.fs.fed.us/spfo/pubs/howtos/ht_prune/prun001.htm

http://www.ces.purdue.edu/extmedia/FNR/FNR-215.pdf

If you are not comfortable pruning these trees yourself, then please contact a local certified arborist (check yellow pages or visit http://www.isa-arbor.com/findArborist/findarborist.aspx

Best of luck
