Maintaining Blue Spruce Height for Aesthetics

I have 2 Blue Spruce on either side of my driveway by the house. They are approx. 25 ft tall. They look perfect at this size and frame the house nicely. What can I do to keep them at this height or slow down their growth?

Greetings Nancy:

Well, I have to admit that I've never received this sort of question before :-) However, I'm not inferring that it is a bad question.

Seeing that most people want their trees to grow taller and larger, this may be a challenge. Now, some tree species are "pre-selected" to achieve a certain maximum size based on landscape design. An example would be small flowering trees such as eastern redbud and flowering dogwood. These trees/small shrubs will never achieve large, tree like dimensions.

Other than periodic pruning of new branch (meristem) growth or applications of growth inhibitors (probably not realistic or financially viable), I'm not aware of any other option for you.

If you need an on-site assessment, please call your local Purdue Extension office and ask to speak with a horticulturist or urban forester.

Best of luck!
