Dear Mr Hayek,

I am thinking of buying a timber walnut tree seedling from a company called "cimpexp". They claim to have a hybrid "MG 9" which grows twice as fast as common walnut tree and ready for use as timber material in 15 years time, when it's 50cm and allegedly increases by 5cm in diametre each year. Have you heared anything about this hybrid? The problem is that i've searched the net , asked specialists in my country (Georgia, Caucasus) and got no answer about the tree. According to the company which sells the tree it could be bought only in France.

Thank you in advance Best regards Manana Gkogkisvili

Greetings Manana:

Sorry Manana, but I've never heard of a so-called MG 9 black walnut hybrid...sounds too good to be true, which means it's probably just marketing :-)

The only resource I am familiar with that would possibly know about this so-called "tree" is the USDA Forest Service & Purdue University - Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center:
