Oak Damage in Horse Paddock

I have an oak tree (16 in di., 45 ft. high) in a horse paddock. In the past month (July) they have stripped the bark from the ground to about 8-9 ft. high.

To prevent further damage to the tree, should I put anything on it. I know the horses will avoid creosete but do not know if that will harm the tree. I have also heard of roofing tar used on trees but I am not sure if that is OK for the tree and am concerned about toxicity should the horses continue to find the tree interesting.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Thank you.

Greetings Joan:

My advice is to NOT apply anything to the bark/tree. If the bark stripping has been severe, the tree may have suffered irreparable damage...only time will tell.

You may want to install some cheap fencing around the perimeter of the tree to prevent continued browsing from the horses, but do not apply any chemical, tar, etc., as this will interfere with the tree's natural wounding processes and it may compromise your horses' health.
