I have a black walnut tree that someone just offered me a couple hundred dollars for, it is 102 in circ. and about 6 to 8 ft tall? Can you tell me how to figure the bd ft? and how much you think it may be worth?? Want to make sure Im not giving it away.

Adrian:

To determine board feet in a log/tree, you must know/take two measurements: diameter of the tree at 4.5 feet (DBH) and merchantable log length.

So, if the tree's DBH is 30 inches and if the log length is 8 feet, then the approximate board footage using the Doyle scale is 270 bd. ft.

I don't appraise timber over the internet. However, if you look at my Timber Blog and Illinois Timber Price Bulletins, you'll see black walnut stumpage values in the neighborhood of $0.80-1.50/bd. ft.

I have a few mature Blackwal nut trees in a lot I am thinking of building and would like to sell them so the wood does not go for waste. Who buys these and what is the expected value of a mature tree...they are over 40 feet tall.

Hi Riyad:

In order to best assist you, I would strongly encourage you to reach out to your local MDC forester for guidance with walnut trees on your building lot:

Best of luck!
