How soon after an old Sugar Maple Tree stump has been removed could you plant a new Sugar Maple Tree in the same spot? Have you ever heard of anyone planting a Sugar Maple Tree into a the stump of an old Sugar Maple Tree and has successfully survived? Sincerely, Martha Sherburne

Greetings Martha:

Simply plant the new tree adjacent to the old stump. Planting a new tree directly atop an old stump is generally not advisable due to the lack of mineral soil. Lack of direct mineral soil will likely affect tree vigor, moisture and nutrient uptake, and tree/root structural stability.
