Pruning Blue Spruce (ME)

We have a large 25+foot blue spruce that has been misshapen by power company cuttings. Also, the top broke off in a giant storm a few years ago. We were heartened that the top has begun to regenerate and actually looks good. Can we prune this large tree back to a trimmer but sprucelike shape? Right now it looks horrible. Lower branches not very full etc. Will new growth fill in on the sides? Thank you for your help...we would like to save this tree as it is large and was once beautiful...can we bring it back?

Greetings Ann:

Corrective pruning often requires on-site guidance by a trained arborists, horiticulturist, or forester. I say that because it is nearly impossible to articulate some recommendations and procedures via an internet forum such as this.

Therefore, I would strongly encourage you to contact your local Extension office to see if they have a professional on staff who could personally assist you. They may or may not have a horticulturist or forester on staff - if not, they should be able to provide you with a list of local arborists.

Best of luck!
