Greetings Bruce:

Late winter pruning is generally considered to be the best time to prune black walnut here in the Midwest. Late winter is generally considered to be December - early February. This practice also holds true for conifers and most hardwoods.

Pruning during the growing season is generally not recommended and should only be considered if there are extenuating circumstances.

Best of luck!
