Residual Juglone in Soil

I had a very large black walnut tree cut down in my backyard last fall. Will I be able to plant a vegetable garden near that location next summer? I am primarily interested in peppers and tomatoes. If not how many years would I have to wait untik the toxins are out of the soil?

Thank you, John

Greetings John:

The mean residence time of the alleotoxin "juglone" is quite variable and likely is affected by soil organic matter content, pH, clay content, soil texture, moisture content, microbial activity, etc.

Rather than reinvent the wheel with an answer to your question, I'm simply going to refer you to an excellent publication by Purdue University which answers all your questions!

Best of luck!
