Old roots -New Tree

Hurricane Ike (Sept 2008) knocked down a Hackberry tree - the tree pulled up at ground level so many roots were attached. How soon can we replant in this area. I am getting differing remarks from nurseries - some saying we can replant in 6 mos, another saying we must move five feet from the old location.

Greetings Karen: I'm of the opinion that you should move the planting location just a little bit from the uprooted tree site as the uprooted tree likely has displaced a significant amount of top soil (O, A, and upper B horizons). Rather than planting a new tree in a depression (i.e., pit), I certainly believe the tree would benefit more from a suitable, adjacent planting location that does not have pit/mound characteristics. Just my opinion...
