Blackjack Oak Value (OK)

Recently 21 black jack oaks were cut down that range in diameter from 9" to 24" and prior to being cut stood 18' to 24' tall. While the trees on this property are not being harvested, there are properties in the area that do harvest the trees for a local saw mill. Many of these trees were old, mature trees that had been on this property for years. Would assigning $100 per inch provide an appropriate value for each tree?

Greetings Leslie:

Blackjack oak (Quercus marilandica) is not generally considered a high-value, commercial oak species. The main value in blackjack oak would be for wildlife value, aesthetics, general habitat, etc. I believe $100/inch is way too high -- if in fact you are relating that value to "timber" and not as an ornamental or landscape tree.

As always, I strongly suggest you contact a local, trained professional consulting forester for an on-site appraisal if you want to receive a fair market assessment for your timber. Local markets tend to dominate in areas with lower-grade wood species (e.g., blackjack oak).

Best of luck!
