Black Spots on Soft Maple Leaves (WI)

I have a soft maple tree that has some of the leaves turning black with holes in them. I can't see any bugs or anything. Any ideas what it is or what I can do? I have other hard maple trees with no leaf problems. Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim: Sounds like "Tar Spot" to me. Here is a link from Purdue University regarding symptoms and control. http://www.ppdl.purdue.edu/PPDL/weeklypics/1-19-09.html Control is pretty simple: rake leaves during autumn and burn/remove them from your property.
