Black Walnut Seed and Neighbors Yard (IL)

I posted a question yesterday asking if something could be done to stop the trees from producing nuts. I have not yet received your reply, but if not here is the complete problem. One of our Black Walnut trees, a mature tree, is close to our lot line with about half of its branches over our neighbors yard. He wants us to cut it down. He said he is considering cutting all the limbs which hang over his yard which would be one whole side of the tree. My question is "What would that do to the tree? Thanks.

Greetings Charles:

Well, the short answer is, "yes, removing half the branches from this walnut tree will have an impact on the health and vigor of this tree."

Beyond the obvious, this is a legal question that should be remedied by both parties. Technically, an adjacent homeowner can cut plant branches that extend into his/her yard --if and only if -- the cut branches do not cause adverse effects as related to the health, vigor, and longevity of the tree in question.
