I believe the evergreen in the yard is a blue spruce - it is massive- is it okay to trim the bottom branches so air and some light can reach - I am only asking about taking the bottom branch section off

Yes, it is perfectly okay to selectively prune side branches from your mature blue spruce. However, I'm a strong advocate of pruning only during the dormant season (i.e., fall through winter).
