Planting New Tree on Old Site (TX)

Lots of Live Oak trees have been cut here after Hurricane Ike. How much of the stump/root system needs to be taken out in order to plan another Live Oak in the same place or very close to the same place. Many of these stumps are over 4' in diameter with multiple surface roots spanning out up to 10' away. How best to prep this ground for replanting?

Greetings Jay:

My suggestions is to find planting locations that have as much mineral soil as possible to accommodate a new planting hole. Granted, you may have to excavate a few roots to accommodate such a hole. You can also contact a local certified arborist for a more practical on-site recommendation...

Best of luck!
