Ironwood or Eastern Hophornbeam

I have heard the tree name "ironwood." I have been unable to find any info about this tree at all. I've checked 2 Illinois tree books to no avail. Is this name slang for another tree?

Greetings Jeff: Ironwood is synonymous with eastern hophornbeam (Ostrya virginiana). Eastern hophornbeam is the preferred common name according to Little's Checklist of United States Trees: Native and Naturalized (1979). Both common names are used in tree identification books and publications.
